A night under the stars—and what comes next

Denise and I recently swapped the comforts of home for a night at Stepping Stone House’s Sleep Under the Stars event.

The sleeping arrangements weren’t particularly comfortable. Hearing seals in the middle of the night was unexpected. And we were very grateful there was no rain!

But the part that stayed with us most was hearing from young people whose lives had changed through the support of Stepping Stone House.

The people behind the purpose

More than 300 people came together for the event, including corporate teams, families and many children. There was live music, presentations and awards, with Benjamin Law as MC.

The most meaningful presentations came from young people who spoke about the challenging circumstances that brought them to Stepping Stone House. They shared how a safe home, practical support, life skills and mentoring had helped them build a different future.

Listening to their experiences brought the purpose of the evening into focus. A safe place to sleep is essential. So is the ongoing support that helps a young person develop confidence, make connections and move towards independence.

Our night outdoors offered only a small glimpse of the discomfort and uncertainty associated with homelessness. We knew we could go home the next day. That certainty is something every young person should have.

Thank you to everyone who contributed

Through the generosity of those who supported my fundraising, I raised $5,258, contributing to an event total of $623,000 at the time of my update.

To everyone who donated: thank you. Your contribution supports work whose value was clear in the stories we heard that evening.

It was also encouraging to see businesses, families and friends participating together. People brought their teams, involved their children and made time to support a shared cause.

The sleepout ends. The support continues.

Stepping Stone House’s work continues throughout the year, and there are several ways to get involved:

Many of us have skills, relationships and experience that could make a useful contribution. Finding a way to put those resources to work can begin with a simple conversation.

Denise and I plan to take part again next year, and you’re very welcome to join us.

In the meantime, my message is simple: one night can bring people together, but continued support helps young people build their futures.
